The William S. Hart Regional Occupational Program (ROP) offers employment training courses to high school students and adults. More than 40 ROP classes offer knowledge about different occupations. Students usually begin looking at ROP courses their junior year, when they can gain exposure to various careers and receive high school credit at the same time. A sampling of the classes includes digital photography, forensics and pharmacy assistant. The upcoming spring semester will introduce some new courses for students:Emergency Medical Responder

Skills to complete accredited EMT course; pre-requisite: student must have passed any anatomy class or have taken and passed any medical ROP class;

at W.S. Hart District office.Commercial Photography

Black/white and color printing and lab procedures, studio and field photography. Meets A-G requirements for UC/CSU; at Saugus H.S.osmetology

Classroom theory, practical experience and training for state licensing; at Flair Beauty College in Canyon Country.Computer Animation

Process for design for entertainment industry and introductory course for visual development for video games; at ITT Tech in Sylmar.Construction Technology

Concepts, practices and activities related to residential and commercial building and carpentry;

at Saugus H.S. Plumbing

Fundamentals in plumbing for new construction and repair; at Saugus HBarbara Okronick, ROP advisor at Canyon High School, stresses that ROP classes are for college-bound students as well as those who want to enter the working world right away. “I think the most beneficial aspect about ROP is that students learn whether they want to continue in the field they chose to explore,” says Okronick.
