Gibbon Conservation Center

Santa Clarita, CA 91390

www.gibboncenter.org

This nonprofit organization is the only one in the world devoted exclusively to the study, preservation, and propagation of gibbon apes, and to educating the public about them. GCC’s secure, captive gene pools are a backup system to the conservation of gibbons in their natural habitat.

The organization claims to have

the largest group of gibbons in the Americas, including six of the 15 extant species, and has reproduced six gibbon species.

Educational tours are offered to groups, as long as there are enough visitors to meet the $100 minimum. GCC has completed tours for students of anthropology, psychology, pre-veterinary and biology, as well as elementary and secondary school groups. Lectures may cover species identification, nutrition, behavior, captive management, plight of the gibbon, or preventive medical care.  Contact GCC at www.gibboncenter.org.

Citizens for Sheltered Animals

26893 Bouquet Canyon Road, C-318

Santa Clarita, CA 91350

(661) 513-9288

www.citizensforshelteredanimals.com

Founded in 1987 by Santa Clarita resident Rick Kerr, this animal rescue organization was born from the loss of Kerr’s 12-year-old Irish Setter, Zeb.

When he visited the animal shelter, Kerr was shocked at the number of beautiful animals that would be destroyed for lack of a home.

What Kerr also discovered was his life’s passion.

“City and County Animal Shelters are an important part of every community,” says the website, www.citizensforshelteredanimals.com. “They are not capable, nor were they ever meant to house thousands of animals. They are not there to solve behavior problems, provide basic training or to socialize our pets.”

Citizens for Sheltered Animals began in Kerr’s backyard with a few handmade sheltered runs, keeping records about vaccines, as well as spay and neutering programs. Citizens for Sheltered Animals seeks to prevent animals from needing placement in shelters, through educating the public and offering residents an alternative.

There are indoor kennels, a pool and a private dog park on the 13-acre property. The organization maintains its facility almost entirely on private donations. On the website there is an opportunity to donate or shop in the “Stuff for Mutts” store.
