Sulphur Springs Union School District students continue to perform among the highest in the state in statewide testing and academic achievement. Each of the nine local elementary schools are California Distinguished Schools, which is the State of California’s award for well-rounded and exceptional schools.

“We have outstanding programs in our local schools, with an emphasis on science, math, and advanced reading and writing,” said Dr. Robert Nolet, Superintendent of Sulphur Springs Union School District. “We are fortunate to have qualified and experienced teachers in our schools.”

At a time when some California schools have been forced to close their school libraries, Sulphur Springs Union School District still operates a school library at every school site. Students have access to librarians and specialists to provide ongoing guidance and support. “Every day, we help students on reports or research,” said Dixie Maness, librarian at Pinetree Community School. “Students have access to computers and up-to-date technology that helps improve academic achievement.”

One measure of student achievement is the Academic Performance Index, which is the State of California’s measure of school district and individual school performance. “A score of 800 is considered excellent,” said Kathy Harris, Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services. “We are proud that our district has scored well above 800 in each of the past five years. “

Teachers in Sulphur Springs Union School District are highly experienced and receive additional training and support. Over 69% of teachers have taught in the district for over 10 years, and 37% have earned a Master’s Degree. The School District provides a mentor program for teachers who are new to the District that allows new teachers to work alongside experienced teachers and mentors.
